Dan-Air
Dan-Air (Dan Air Services Limited) was a leading private, independent airline based in the United Kingdom.
A wholly owned subsidiary of London shipbroking firm Davies and Newman, Dan-Air started in 1953 with a single aircraft.
Initially, it operated cargo and passenger charter flights from Southend (1953–1955) and Blackbushe Airports (1955–1960) using a variety of piston-engined aircraft.
Dan-Air started in the United Kingdom in May 1953 with a Douglas DC-3 based at Southend Airport. The aircraft, bearing the registration G-AMSU, originally belonged to Meredith Air Transport, a small Southend-based ad hoc charter operator formed in 1952. Dan-Air's parent Davies and Newman had been engaged in shipbroking in the City of London since 1922. Davies and Newman had also acted as Meredith's air charter brokers on London's Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange and held a debenture on their aircraft in return for extending financial assistance. When Meredith got into financial difficulties and the debenture became due for repayment, Davies and Newman took over the aircraft together with a six-month contract to operate a series of charter flights between Southend and West Berlin's Tempelhof Airport that formed part of the second Little Berlin Airlift.
